This was an aspect that was crucial in the original Dragon Ball before Dragon Ball Z introduced things like Power Levels. This goes so far as the overall ethos of Dragon Ball Super, where it isn’t just about the Z-Fighters getting higher levels of power, but also honing better techniques in battle. This includes the Pilaf Gang, the Red Ribbon Army, and even the Mafuba technique. Since then, Dragon Ball Super has not only served as a direct continuation of the events of Dragon Ball Z but has brought back many concepts and characters from the original Dragon Ball. What may seem out of leftfield is actually a great call back to the end of the original Dragon Ball, where Kami offered the role of Earth’s God to Goku after he won the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. Goku’s Ascensionĭragon Ball Super began with Goku achieving a whole new level of power with Super Saiyan God, a transformation that introduced the concept of God Ki. Just over five years since the Tournament of Power, it is clear that Dragon Ball Super’s slow-burn approach may just be building up to something much bigger, potentially even more than a tournament between the multiverse. Since the end of the Universal Survival saga in 2018, the franchise has been in a sort of freefall, allowing itself to tell disparate stories without a build-up to something as big and impactful as the Tournament of Power.Īt least, this was the case once that arc ended as Dragon Ball Super: Broly and the manga-exclusive Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga seemed to be standalone stories that acted as tests of strength for Goku, Vegeta, and the Z-Fighters.
